First Day at the Basic Plane Building Workshop: Step by Step
From getting to know the parts to the first field flight, we walk through a day at the Basic Plane Building Workshop.
People thinking about our Basic Plane Building Workshop most often ask: “Can you really build a plane in a day?” The answer is yes. Here is how a day at the workshop goes, step by step.
Safety briefing and introductions
The day starts with short introductions and the workshop safety rules. The safe use of the soldering station, cutting tools and LiPo batteries is covered in the first hour.
Getting to know the parts
The airframe, wings, motor, ESC, servos, receiver and battery are laid out on the table. We explain what each part does and how they connect, together with the four forces of flight.
Airframe and wing assembly
With an instructor, participants assemble the airframe, fit the wings and hinge the control surfaces. Good alignment at this stage is the biggest factor in how well the plane flies.
Wiring the electronics
The motor, ESC and battery are connected, with soldering where needed. The servos are linked to the control horns with push rods.
Radio and trim setup
The receiver is bound to the radio, and control surface directions and throws are set. Then the centre of gravity is checked and the battery is moved if needed.
The first flight
At the end of the day, weather permitting, we head to the flying field. The first take-off is done with an instructor, and participants get the thrill of flying the plane they built.
