Getting Into FPV Drone Racing: Gear, Technique and First Steps
A guide to gear, simulator practice, choosing a first drone and safety rules for anyone starting FPV drone racing.
FPV (First Person View) drone racing has become one of the most exciting tech sports of recent years. These small quadcopters can exceed 150 km/h and give their pilots a unique flying experience.
The gear you need
To get started you need a 5-inch racing drone, FPV goggles, a radio with at least 6 channels, 4S–6S LiPo batteries and a good charger.
Start on a simulator
Before investing in a real drone, practise for at least 20 hours on an FPV simulator such as Velocidrone, Liftoff or DRL Simulator. Learning acro mode is far cheaper on a simulator.
Choosing a first drone
Small whoop-class drones are great for indoor practice. When you move outdoors, start with a ready-to-fly (BNF) 5-inch model. Building your own drone is the next step, and our FPV Training Kit is designed for it.
Safety and regulations
Always fly FPV with a spotter. Check SHGM registration and flight permission requirements, and fly in designated areas away from crowds.
