10 Golden Rules for Beginners in RC Plane Building

The basic rules for a solid start in RC model planes, from choosing a trainer to pre-flight checks.

We understand the excitement of starting out with RC model planes. Patience and a good start, though, are what let you enjoy the hobby for years. Here are 10 golden rules for beginners.

1. Start with a trainer

Make your first plane a trainer. High-wing, flat-bottomed, slow-flying models are ideal for beginners. Leave aerobatic and jet models for later.

2. Use a simulator

Practise on an RC flight simulator before flying for real. At least 10 hours on a simulator greatly reduces the risk of a crash on your first real flight.

3. Take the wind seriously

RC planes are very sensitive to wind. For your first flights, pick calm days with wind under 8 km/h.

4. Choose the right battery

Your battery directly affects flight time and performance. 1300–2200mAh 3S LiPo packs suit beginners. Always follow LiPo charging and storage safety rules.

5. Limit control throws

Use dual rates at 60–70% on your first flights. Too much control surface movement makes beginners lose control.

6. Use a pre-flight checklist

Before every flight, check battery voltage, servo movement, propeller tightness, radio signal and centre of gravity, and make it a habit.

7. Keep spare parts

Crashes are part of the hobby. Spares for parts that often break, such as propellers, landing gear and control horns, can save your flying day.

8. Centre of gravity is critical

If the centre of gravity is wrong, the plane either won’t fly or becomes uncontrollable. Always follow the CG point given in the build manual.

9. Meet the community

Joining a local RC club, learning from experienced pilots and sharing flying fields are among the best parts of the hobby. Our workshop events exist for exactly this reason.

10. Safety comes first

RC planes are not toys; spinning propellers can cause serious injuries. Keep a safe distance on the field, fly away from people and never fly over crowds.
